Automakers posted strong sales results for November on Monday, with Ford Motor Co. hitting a 6.5 percent increase, while General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC reported their best Novembers in five years.

Car companies are reporting higher car sales for November in part due to consumers who delayed buying or are replacing cars following Hurricane Sandy.

Chrysler's Ram pickup sales soared 23 percent in November, and Ford's F-series sales jumped 17.9 percent in November, but GM's truck sales slid 11 percent for the month. The Detroit automaker said sales of large pickups fell 8 percent from November 2011 due to "unexpectedly high competitive incentive activity, which GM did not match."

GM's 186,505 sales rose 3.4 percent over the same month in 2011, with passenger car sales jumping 19 percent and crossover sales rising 9 percent. The company said its Buick, Cadillac and GMC brands all posted sales increases, though its largest brand, Chevrolet, reported flat sales.
