Ford Motor Co.’s Louisville Assembly Plant, on Fern Valley Road, received recognition recently from company headquarters in Dearborn, Mich., related to a storm-water project.

The plant received the company’s North American Environmental Award for a project in which large pervious pavers were used to resurface a portion of the plant’s parking lot.

The project was an investment of more than $1.4 million. About $1.2 million came through a grant from the Louisville-Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District.

Long said MSD officials approached Ford about the project as the plant was being retooled for the launch of the Ford Escape in 2011. The pavers allow storm water to be deposited into the ground rather than have it channeled through the city’s storm sewer system, explained Greg Long, environmental control engineer for Ford. Because of the pavers, about 18 million gallons of storm water are removed from the city’s storm water system in the area each year, Long said.
