Chris Woodyard,

The auto industry, always trying to think of features that drivers didn't necessarily know they needed, has come up with a new one.

General Motors has found that smartphone overheating is a problem. To solve it, Chevrolet is introducing "Active Phone Cooling." Basically, it's an air-conditioning vent for your smartphone. It's coming in the Impala and several other models.

The feature is borne out of the finding that smartphones were not charging when they got too hot in cars. When car interiors heat up on a sunny day or the sun is beating through the window, phones can overheat.
