The U.S. Auto Industry Drives Domestic Job Creation

From research labs and supplier factories to assembly lines and dealership showrooms, U.S. automakers, their suppliers, their dealerships, and the local businesses that support them are responsible for more than 7.25 million U.S. jobs. No manufacturing sector employs more U.S. workers.

Together, the 15 major automakers competing in the U.S. directly employ about 388,000 U.S. workers. FCA US, Ford, and General Motors employ 238,000 of these U.S. workers, meaning that FCA US, Ford, and General Motors employ nearly 2 out of 3 of America’s autoworkers.

The fact that FCA US, Ford, and General Motors account for 64% of U.S. auto jobs is remarkable, especially considering that they account for only 44% of U.S. market share.

FCA US, Ford, and General Motors produce more of their vehicles here, conduct more of their research here, and buy more of their parts here. As a result, they have based nearly seven times more of their global workforce in the U.S. than their competitors.

    Ford to launch pilot program to employ adults with autism

    Ford Motor Co. announced Wednesday it will launch a pilot program to hire adults with autism on June 1.

    Ford will create five positions in product development suited to the skills and capabilities of workers with autism for the program, called FordInclusiveWorks, the Dearborn-based automaker said in a news release. The program was developed with Autism Alliance of Michigan — a nonprofit founded by Dave Meador, vice chairman and chief administrative officer at DTE Energy Co. The alliance is funding the training program tied to the jobs.

    General Motors to add light duty truck production in Flint in 2017

    General Motors will add production of its Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab at the Flint Assembly plant beginning in 2017. The light duty truck is currently produced in Mexico. Flint Assembly also produces the heavy-duty Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks.

    Ford Redevelopment Plan In Dearborn Estimated At $1.2B

    Ford unveiled sweeping plans today to redevelop dozens of buildings in Dearborn that house more than 30,000 employees in a project that will transform the automaker's presence in the city into two distinct campuses over the next 10 years.

    The project, which represents an investment estimated at more than $1.2 billion, is intended to give Ford's employees the work environment and technology necessary to design and develop cars of the future.

    In some ways, the massive project, in planning for more than three years, is long overdue.

    They were traditional American housewives, mothers and daughters in the 1940s, when suddenly everything changed. Millions of men left home to fight in World War II, and the country needed help to produce the machines of war. An army of women answered the call.
     
    They became known as Rosie the Riveters, thanks to a popular film and promotional campaign. In addition to their work on assembly lines, they had a lasting impact on the country, changing perceptions and expanding opportunities for future women in the workforce.

    Ford Plans to Add Four SUVs Globally in Next Four Years

    Ford Motor Co. will add four new SUVs to its global lineup by 2020 to serve what it sees as a dramatic and ongoing shift away from passenger cars.

    Mark LaNeve, Ford's vice president of sales and marketing, announced the plans Thursday at the Chicago Auto Show. LaNeve said SUV sales have nearly doubled in the U.S. since 2010, and the growth is driven by consumer preference, not by low gas prices.
