The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is an automotive All-Star, at least in the eyes of Automobile. The All-Star awards are essentially the Automobile equivalent to Car and Driver’s 10 Best: the publication’s highest praise, with none of the typical objective criteria. We’re sure that the General is honored.
Some measure of perplexity from the reader is understandable, Automobile writes; the Camaro Z/28 loses 75 horsepower compared to the supercharged Camaro ZL1, not to mention a whole host of creature comforts like air conditioning, magnetic ride damping, and even an audio system that offers more than one speaker.
But these things don’t matter, taken in the context of what the Z/28 represents: a fearsome, super-capable track terror meant for roaring down straightaways and setting blistering new records. As Automobile says, the spool valve suspension dampers are a trickle-down technology from Formula 1 racing, only ever used in one other production vehicle. That vehicle happens to be the unattainable Aston Martin One-77 hypercar.
